This iconic landmark has over the years become an international symbol of the city of Hyderabad and is an unmissable stop for anyone passing through the city. The Charminar was built in 1594, shortly after the city was founded, and serves as both a monument and mosque. On each corner of the square is a beautifully designed minaret that towers 184 tall and defines the look of the structure. A beautiful and historic stop.
Golkonda Fort is a set of ruins that lies due east of Hyderabad, but offers an incredible experience for anyone with the time to get out of the city. Golkonda Fort is a collection of ruins dating back over 1,000 years that offer a full day of exploration, and many different historic buildings are well worth your time, such as the Mosque of Ibrahim and Bala Hissar Gate. One of the most interesting aspects of Golkonda Fort, however, is the mines that run beneath it. It was from these diamond mines that some of the world’s most famous diamonds were found, such as the Hope Diamond and the Koh-I-Noor Diamond.
Qutb Shahi Tombs
If you can make it out to the Golkonda Fort, then you should probably also try to visit the seven Qutb Shahi Tombs. These tombs dominate the horizon of the area, and most feature elaborate, beautiful dome shaped roofs. These beautiful monuments were built over a period that spanned over one hundred years, and while grave robbers have looted the original overlay work that they were built with, recent restoration has returned the tombs to a certain degree of their former glory.
While there are plenty of wonderful historical sites to explore around Hyderabad, for an example of more modern Indian design visit the grand Birla Mandir Hindu temple. The temple was built in 1976 and is composed of over 2000 tons of pure white marble. With elaborate inscriptions, designs and beautiful architectural features, the Birla Mandir is a great stop on your sightseeing tour.
